dc.description.abstract This paper examines the viability of Jatropha curcas production focusing on the economic impacts on smallholder farmers in Yatta District. The study employed causal-comparative research design and quantitative research method was used where questionnaires were administered to 240 respondents selected through multi-stage sampling technique. Gross Margin Calculation was undertaken to compare the profitability of Jatropha cultivation to main crops where means of both gross margins were compared using paired sample t-tests statistic. It was found that gross margin for Jatropha grown in the three different modes was found to be significantly lower compared to pigeon peas and bean. Therefore it is important for farmers to make a balanced choice in using their limited land to engage in Jatropha production before proper policies on biofuels are put in place to ensure high yields, avoid the risks of poor market conditions and increased consumption of biofuels in the country. en_US
