Discusses the aims and objectives of Moi University, a science and technology‐oriented institution of higher education. Outlines the mission of the university library, the aim of which is to support the entire university curricula. Observes that there is an urgent need for the university administration to have a well‐defined policy and criteria on library staff development, training and promotion if it is to provide better library services to the university community. Although library staff have the same status as the teaching faculty, and comparable privileges and salary grades, when it comes to training they are given a raw deal. Proposes that the university administration should recruit a well‐qualified university librarian as provided for in the University Act and Statutes. Concludes by urging the university management to train library staff to be computer literate so as to improve and provide effective services in the forthcoming new automated university libraryen_US
