Abstract: The use of wireless networks in institutions of higher learning is gaining popularity due to its flexibility. With wireless campus networks, students are able to use their mobile devices to access lecture materials, watch lecture videos, access online campus resources, attend online classes and do exams, assignments and quizzes irrespective of the time or location. The use of wireless campus networks also enhances collaboration and teamwork among students and faculty. However, due to its being uncontrolled medium, wireless networks are prone to more security risks as opposed to the traditional local area networks. Anyone who can access the signal can be able to apply different techniques to gain access to the network without permission. Cases of hacking into wireless networks have been reported across the globe, with universities and other learning institutions being the main targets. With the reviewed literature showing that security of wireless networks is usually an afterthought and no studies had been done to assess the security of wireless networks in Kenya. This study was therefore aimed at assessing the security of wireless networks in selected universities in Kenya and thereafter proposed an Online Wireless Network Security Assessment Tool (OWNSAT) and a model for securing such networks. The study was guided by the game theory. A qualitative research design was applied in the study. The data collection tool included; practical experiments, personal interviews, and covert observation. Data was collected from purposively selected 20 universities in Kenya. From an analysis of the collected data it was evident that there were major areas of concern that needed to be addressed by network administrators to improve on the security of their networks. Given that no single tool was found that could be used to assess security of wireless networks, the proposed OWNSAT is an invaluable contribution to this area of study. In addition, the recommended model can be used to ensure more secure wireless networks leading to many advantages for universities.
