Moi University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1984. It is built on land covering over 3000 acres formally owned by the East African Tanning and Extract Company (EATEC). This piece of land is located in a rural agricultural land previously owned by white settlers who have since been bought by indigenous people. The farms have since been renamed as Kesses, Talai, Cheboiywo, Chesunet, Asurruriet, Kosirai, Tulwet and Ketiplong and form Moi University’s immediate neighborhood. The communities in these farms are engaged in mixed farming comprising of wheat, maize and livestock keeping. The Extension and Outreach activities have positively marketed the university’s programmes and the presence of Moi University has been felt countrywide through the establishment of Satellite Campuses meant to take education closer to the people.en_US
