A study of Idustrial attachment programme provided through collaboration between TVET Institutions and Industries in Nairobi Province of Kenya

Abstract

International recommendations of UNESCO2001 for the improvement education and vocational training systems systematically of technical referred to the need to forge closer links between training and the labour market.Adequate collaboration Technical and Vocational industries in providing Education the industrial and Training attachment (TVET) institutions programme between and relevant would lead to proper management of the programme and provision of relevant practical skills to assist students in their transition from school to the world of work. In Kenya it has been observed that there is little collaboration process of industrial between TVET institutions and the world of work and the attachment has not been adequately managed hence there are challenges being experienced. This study was undertaken to find out how the industrial attachment programme was being carried out and managed by these two stakeholders in Nairobi Province of Kenya. This was in view of challenges experienced iri student placement and management of the programme. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study included the third year students, higher national diploma students and TVET providers in the six public post-secondary TVET institutions in Nairobi Province and training managers from industries in Nairobi Province. The simple random sampling technique was applied to select 340 respondents from the study population and questionnaires were used in the collection of data. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics in SPSS and results presented in tabular and graphical forms. The study found out that TVET and industry collaborations were minimal except for the industrial attachment even though it was also not well organized and managed. Financing of TVET programmes was among the challenges faced in collaborations. It government through HELB provides loans to TVET students to facilitate them during the industrial attachment programme.
